Unadilla Man Faces Rap Charges After Police Found Indoor Marijuana Grow In His Home

John Thomas Laing, 53, is charged with criminal possession of marijuana in the first degree and unlawfully growing cannabis by an unlicensed person.

According to officials, sheriff’s investigators conducted a search at Laing’s residence and property. Inside Laing’s home the following items were seized:┬ámore than 10 pounds of marijuana, 95 marijuana plants, 54 cloned marijuana plants, a triple beam balance, about $10,000 in growing equipment and $30,102 in cash, authorities say. According to the DEA, the marijuana had a street value of more than $800,000.

Laing had been arrested in 2004 when he had a large indoor marijuana grow in the Town of Oneonta, according to the sheriff’s office.

Steven R. Carpenter, 36, of Guilford was at Laing’s home during the execution of the search warrant and was charged with unlawful possession of marijuana.

Laing was being held at the Otsego County Correctional Facility in lieu of $10,000 bail. If convicted, he faces up to five and a half years in prison.
